Clarification
posted on: 21 October 2006
With the recent chain of posts on the tag board, I feel that a proper explanation is due so club members can understand the situation better, and to see the matter in the proper light. This post is aimed to clarify the doubts and questions that would have crossed most of our bowlers' minds. It is just that 3 people, that I suspect is actually 1 person under 3 names, have brought the matters up, but have done so in a rude and unreasonable manner. However, being civilized, I shall address the matter less like ruffians.
Firstly, Temasek Polytechnic bowlers are sponsored by the school for bowling training (ref. bowler). There is a very good reason why. There are good bowlers in the school that win tournaments. The school takes into the consideration the performance of the club before approving the funds for the club. In TP, bowlers go through a selection to see if they are fit to be in the team, and good attendance is also required. Here in Singapore Polytechnic however, we are not as fortunate to be under the funding of the school for obvious reasons. We however, are able to allow bowlers to be in the team/club as long as they conduct themselves properly and have good attendance. I too hope that training could be less costly and even better free, but this is only possible if we show the results. Rather than doing nothing about it and give unconstructive criticism, I urge you to bowl better and show the results first. I would also like you to consider your comparison of SP vs. TP's bowling team properly and thoroughly before commenting, because it would make you sound less stupid.
Secondly, through simple mathematical calculation, $12.50 X 4(weeks) = $50. I am appalled that you could say that we are cheating (ref. Bowler) you of your money. Please do not distort the facts. On a side note, since we are paying our own training, perhaps you would like to know how much training actually cost. Lanes come at $15-10 per hour per lane, depending on location. Our trainings are organized such that 3 person is to a lane. Training is for 2 hours. Taking the average amount, $12.50 as lane fee, the cost of lanes alone would be (12.5X 2)/3 = $8.30. From this amount, we add the coaching fee of about $100 considering a group of 21-24 bowlers, you would come to slightly above $12. The extra 50 cents goes to the club fund, to provide money for self-sponsored competitions and other events such as farewell for seniors.
For your information, the arrangement to collect for a month's training fee is to urge bowlers to come regularly for training. As a bowler of SPBC, you are supposed to be responsible enough to keep good attendance and conduct. But as our attendance list has shown, many bowlers come and go as and when they like. The committee works hard to ensure trainings and other events are well planned out so that we can all become better bowlers, but if you are not interested, you are welcome to quit, as being a member of SPBC is a privilege and not an entitlement, and as such we are not obliged to adjust rules of the club to your whim and fancy. If you think you can do a better job as a management committee member, you are welcome to try. Yes I agree that coughing up $50 at one go is a bit difficult, but considering members' attendance and tardiness, I think it is only logical.
If you have a valid reason to not turn up for training, like sickness or have something important, you can approach or call the Training-in-Charge or Captain/President, if possible in advance, and we will gladly refund your training fee. You can also download or obtain a copy of the SPBC's official LOA form from the website and hand it up. Let me stress that we will only refund you if you have a valid reason, and not reasons like "I come on alternate wks" (*quote Bowler at 11:19pm 18/10/06 IP 6:52). If one is to spend so much time collecting fees at the start of each training, we would be wasting lane time, which then would really be wasting your money. Unless you can assure that all bowlers come early to pay for training and try to give exact change, we would not have considered this option.
Lastly, it would help if you identified yourself so we can address your concerns better. If you choose to post such comments in the future with no basis of logic or fact and with such foul language, I would see to it that your post be moderated or removed. Likewise I welcome constructive criticism and serious questions and queries. I hope this post would enlighten you on how much hard work the club committee is putting in. If you would like things to improve or think you have a better idea, you are welcome to voice your opinions in a civilized matter.
